Maker Monday: Meet Brittney Brubaker of Rose of the Earth
This week for Maker Monday, we’re featuring Rose of the Earth, an artisanal skincare and candle company handcrafted in the Bitterroot Valley by maker and owner Brittney Brubaker.
From dreamy scents like Lavender Moon and Spring Rain to nature-inspired fragrances that feel equal parts cozy and enchanting, Brittney’s creations capture little pieces of Montana in every product. Poured slowly, intentionally, and by hand, her candles are inspired by the forests, gardens, and wild beauty of Montana.
We caught up with Brittney to chat about creativity, candle-making, nature, and—one of her scent muses—Taylor Swift.
J&M: First things first — how did Rose of the Earth begin?
BB: I had been making soap for years for myself, my family, and my friends, and finally decided I really wanted to pursue it further and share my passion with more people! After the seed was planted, the concept and branding came naturally, and Rose of the Earth became official in 2023. Over time, I’ve expanded to include a range of products, including candles, lip balms, and upcycled clothing.
J&M: Your products feel very inspired by nature. Where do you get ideas for scents and ingredients?
BB: Yes, absolutely! I am very inspired by nature. I mean, we live in Western Montana, how can you not be inspired?! I am a floral girlie through and through, so those scents are my favorites, but I also have several that feature notes like mountain air, petrichor, etc. I also like to incorporate botanicals in my soap when I can, especially those that I can grow in my garden or sustainably forage.
J&M: What’s your favorite scent right now?
BB: Dandelion Daydreams, for sure. It’s like sunshine in a bar of soap. I infuse the oils with dandelions my kids help me pick, and it has a bright, citrusy essential oil blend, as well as poppy seeds saved from our garden, which make it nice and scrubby.
J&M: We noticed a few of your scent names might overlap with certain Taylor Swift song titles (Opalite, Into the Woods)… coincidence, or are you secretly crafting soaps for woodland cottagecore Swifties?
BB: I think this the first time I have heard the phrase “woodland cottagecore Swifties” but I love it, and that sounds pretty spot on. I think it started with Lavender Haze and escalated from there. I’m very inspired by music in general, and love a good theme. I’ve named soaps after songs from other artists, too, but it’s usually TS.
J&M: We love that your products are thoughtfully made. What’s important to you when choosing ingredients?
BB: Being able to choose my own ingredients is what got me into soapmaking in the first place! I have extremely sensitive skin, so my primary concern is choosing ingredients that are gentle, moisturizing, and won’t dry out or irritate my skin. Choosing ingredients that are ethical and sustainable is also very important to me. For instance, I do not use palm oil under any circumstances, and my products are almost all plant-based, although I will occasionally use beeswax and milk from small local farms. And, of course, safe! I use only clean, phthalate-free fragrances and have several essential oil-only blends.
J&M: Last question — if Rose of the Earth had a motto, what would it be?
BB: Oh, this is a tough one! I’ll go with “Every day you’re alive is a special occasion, treat it that way.”
J&M: Thanks for taking the time to chat with us, Brittney!
Brittney will be joining us at our Blooms & Beyond Makers Market on Sunday, June 14th, from 4 pm to 8 pm!
