Temporary Neighbors, Lasting Connection: Community on the Road
“Add me on Snap.” “Do you have Instagram?” “What’s your TikTok handle?”
Somewhere along the way, talking to screens started replacing talking to actual people. You see it everywhere now—even when ordering fast food. Which is probably why places built around real, face-to-face connection feel more valuable than ever. And that’s part of what makes RV parks special.
RV travel is built on lived experience. It’s someone walking over to warn you about a road that’s not great for big rigs. It’s a neighbor showing up with a spare hose fitting when yours gives out. It’s swapping weather updates before the next windstorm rolls in, or trading advice on the best route north towards Glacier National Park.
These are the kinds of things you won’t find in an app or a search bar—they come from people who are actually here, traveling the same roads, dealing with the same conditions, figuring it out as they go.
At Jim & Mary’s RV Park, we see that every day. Guests don’t just pass through—they look out for each other. They share route tips, swap favorite watering holes in Missoula (which, in our neck of the woods, could mean a bar or a literal hot spring), and pass along the truly important information—like the fact that the huckleberry popcorn in our gift shop lives up to the hype (really, it’s the best).
Community is at the heart of everything we do here. From the guests who stay with us to the people who work here, we try to create a place where real connections can happen.
Our shop is filled with locally made Montana goods, highlighting talented makers across the state—including some of our very own employees!—rather than mass-produced products shipped in from elsewhere. We host monthly art markets that bring people together, along with events like comedy nights that support local talent and give guests and neighbors a reason to gather, share space, and step away from their screens and rigs for a while.
We also keep some traditions simple on purpose—like our Fourth of July park parade. Instead of watching fireworks on a phone screen or on a feed elsewhere, everyone gathers here in person. People line up along the park, we decorate golf carts, and the whole place just feels alive in a way you can’t really replicate digitally. It’s not about spectacle—it’s about being in it together.
As our park owner, Jen, puts it, it really comes down to something pretty straightforward:
“Just being able to take the time to actually talk to someone, get to know a bit about them. I feel like so many of Missoula’s small businesses are really great at being more personal; you can tell they genuinely care about you. That’s the kind of feeling I try to get across in my business, because we do care. We want you to be happy and enjoy your visit!”
That same mindset shows up in the smaller details here, too.
Our gardeners start everything from seed in the middle of winter—long before the park is full again. By the time summer arrives, what you’re seeing isn’t something brought in or installed, but something that’s been tended to for months, right here on site.
It’s slower, but it makes a difference. You can feel it in the way the place comes to life as the warmer months approach.
You can even see that same philosophy in our T-shirt merch.
We could have outsourced the artwork or used a quick digital shortcut, but we didn’t. Instead, it was built entirely by hand by our very own Robin—from sketch to carved block to final print—using real details from the park itself. Flowers, animals, vegetables, and seasonal pieces you can actually find outside.
Nothing about it was rushed or pulled from somewhere else. It came from paying attention to what’s already here and taking the time to turn it into something tangible.
RV life isn’t just about where you park—it’s about the people you meet and the experiences you share while you’re there. And those unplanned, unpolished moments of real, human connection are what people tend to remember long after they’ve moved on to their next destination.
Come for the mountain views, stay for the community.
